2016 WWE Awards: Top Five Rivalries of 2017 news

RealSport's WWE Awards for 2016 have been decided, and these five rivalries have stood out as the best of 2016!
With 2016 coming to a close, it’s time to take a look back at some of the best things from this year in WWE! To begin, these awards will be specific to WWE and its extended brands, such as the Cruiserweight Classic and NXT. To keep things organized, awards will be decided separately for independent promotions such as NJPW, ROH, Lucha Underground, etc. These awards were voted on by several different writers and the results have been tallied up to see who made the biggest impact and what moments stood out in 2016. Without further ado, here are the five best rivalries from 2016!

5. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe

The issues between Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe began during the build to NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II. After defeating Austin Aries at NXT TakeOver: The End, Nakamura had cemented himself was one of the rising forces within NXT. General Manager William Regal named him the #1 Contender to the NXT Championship, but this only angered NXT Champion Samoa Joe who claimed Nakamura had it handed to him. The two squared off for the first time in Brooklyn and put on a heated match, but it was Shinsuke Nakamura who came out on top with his first ever NXT Championship in hand. The tensions between Joe and Nakamura got worse as the weeks went on, and a vicious attack from Samoa Joe almost severely injured Nakamura.
Fortunately, the NXT Champion was able to recover and get himself ready for his rematch at NXT TakeOver: Toronto, but this time Samoa Joe came out on top. When Nakamura got his rematch, he took home field advantage and faced Joe in Osaka, Japan to reclaim the NXT Championship and become only the second two-time NXT Champion. Samoa Joe’s rematch took place inside a Steel Cage in Australia, but Nakamura was able to retain once more. The viciousness of the feud both solidified Nakamura’s place in NXT, but it also pushed Samoa Joe to new heights and made him seem even more dangerous.

4. The Revival vs. DIY

While it was The Revival that dominated the tag team division through most of 2016, it was their rivalry with DIY that truly set itself apart from the pack. The team of Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa picked up a non-title victory against The Revival on an episode of NXT and set their sights on the NXT Tag Team Championship. They pushed their way towards a championship opportunity at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II that turned out to be a Match of the Year candidate.
Unfortunately, constant work on the leg of Johnny Gargano throughout the match proved to be too much for DIY to overcome. Gargano tapped out, and it looked like the dream might be over. Gargano recovered in the coming weeks, and DIY managed to get another shot at the champions at NXT TakeOver: Toronto. The two teams clashed in a two out of three falls match, and The Revival grabbed the first fall. DIY was able to fight back and pick up the second and third fall to finally capture the NXT Tag Team Championships. The heated clashes between these two teams raised the level of NXT tag division throughout 2016.

3. AJ Styles vs. John Cena

The issues between AJ Styles and John Cena almost manifested from both men’s sheer existence. For years, before AJ Styles had arrived in WWE, there was always the lingering “what if” about the face of TNA and the face of WWE going up against one another. When they finally met face to face in the ring on an episode of Monday Night Raw, the arena was electric. They set their sights on a clash at Money in the Bank, but the interference of Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson left the victory of AJ Styles tainted.
John Cena pushed that AJ had ruined a classic by taking the low road, and contested that AJ couldn’t beat him without help. The rivalry heated up at Battleground as Cena teamed with Enzo Amore & Big Cass against Styles, Gallows, and Anderson. At SummerSlam, we finally got the match we’d all been craving. John Cena and AJ Styles put on the best main roster match of the year and proved their skills once again. AJ picked up a clean victory over John Cena and began touting himself as “The Face That Runs The Place.” As the year comes to a close, Cena has set his sights on WWE Champion AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble, and if their 2016 was any indication, the next chapter in this heated rivalry will be nothing short of phenomenal.

2. The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler

Going into 2016, I certainly didn’t expect to see The Miz put on a Match of the Year candidate and end up in one of the best rivalries of the year. After capturing the Intercontinental Championship the night after WrestleMania, The Miz quietly rejuvenated the championship while coming into a new surge in his own career. Not since his WWE Championship run had Miz hit such a level, but it was the brand split that sent things up another notch. Miz’s pipe bomb promo on Daniel Bryan sent the intensity into overdrive, and when Dolph Ziggler put his focus on the Intercontinental Championship things hit a new level.
On paper, this seems like a mediocre rivalry from five years ago, but somehow both men pushed themselves to new levels. Ziggler came up short in his Intercontinental Title opportunity at No Mercy and a few weeks later on SmackDown Live, but both times were tainted by Miz’s cheap tactics. Ziggler pushed his way to one last shot and put his career on the line, and what resulted was a match that stole the show and was later referenced as having deserved to be the main event. They squared off again in a Ladder Match at TLC, and ended up having the most captivating rivalry of SmackDown Live.

1. Charlotte Flair vs. Sasha Banks

While there were several rivalries that made their mark on 2016, none was more intense than the ongoing clash between Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks. The seeds of this had been bubbling ever since Charlotte, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch were called up to the main roster in 2015. The three of them faced off in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 32, but it was Charlotte who walked out the WWE Women’s Champion. After Becky Lynch was drafted to SmackDown, Sasha Banks had an unimpeded path to Charlotte and challenged her for the Women’s Championship in July on Monday Night Raw. On the first Raw after the brand split, Sasha Banks managed to defeat Charlotte and capture the championship for the first time.
Charlotte got her rematch at SummerSlam and reclaimed her title, but it was Sasha’s rematch in October on Raw that let her capture the title for the second time. Things heated up even more as Charlotte and Sasha main evented Hell in a Cell and were the first women to compete inside Hell in a Cell where Charlotte captured her third championship. A rematch on Raw in a Falls Count Anywhere match left Sasha with her third title, and finally the rivalry reached some closure at Roadblock: End of the Line as Charlotte defeated Sasha in a 30 Minute Iron Man Match. While some disliked the trading of the championship, Charlotte and Sasha made history on multiple occasions and gave us easily

Australia v Pakistan: Steve Smith hits century on day four of second Test

Steve Smith
Steve Smith has made centuries in three consecutive Boxing Day Tests

Captain Steve Smith struck his 17th Test century as Australia overtook Pakistan's total on a rain-hit fourth day of the second Test in Melbourne.
Smith's unbeaten 100 from 168 balls helped Australia reach 465-6 and take a 22-run first-innings lead after lunch.
But play came to an early end because of rain just two balls after Smith, 27, brought up his fourth century of 2016.
Usman Khawaja only added two runs to his overnight 95 but Peter Handscomb made a spirited 54 alongside Smith.
With rain falling, the players went off for an early tea and play was eventually abandoned shortly before 5pm local time.
The weather looks to have ended Australia's hopes of forcing a win and wrapping up the three-match series 2-0.

cricket news Australia v Pakistan: Azhar Ali hits news

Ali Azhar
Azhar's double century saw him become the first Pakistan player to surpass 200 runs twice in a calendar year
Second Test, Melbourne (day three):
Pakistan 443-9 dec: Azhar 205*, Shafiq 50, Bird 3-91, Hazlewood 2-33
Australia: 278-2: Warner 144, Khawaja 95*, Wahab 1-77, Yasir 1-97
Scorecard
Azhar Ali scored an unbeaten 205 as Pakistan declared on 443-9 before David Warner's 144 from 143 balls sparked hopes of an Australian comeback on day three of the second Test in Melbourne.
The hosts ended on 278-2 after Warner's 198-run partnership with Usman Khawaja helped cut Pakistan's lead to 165.
Khawaja was unbeaten on 95, with captain Steve Smith on 10 not out.
Warner was reprieved on 81 when he was bowled by a no ball before being caught behind off a later Wahab Riaz delivery.
Pakistan pace bowler Wahab sent down a total of 10 no balls, including three overstepped marks in the over of Warner's non-dismissal.
Azhar's superb double hundred was the highest innings by a Pakistan player in Australia, and only three runs short of the record for touring batsmen at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, set by West Indies' Viv Richards in 1984.
The 31-year-old also became his nation's first player to surpass 200 twice in a calendar year, having scored an unbeaten 302 against West Indies in Dubai in

Live: Australia vs Pakistan, Boxing Day Test, Day Four at the MCG

Rain, rain go away, come again another day.
And make sure that day isn’t Friday, or any of the days between January 3-7. Please.
Poor weather continues to ruin the Boxing Day Test as no play was possible after tea was taken 20 minutes early on day four. By that point Steve Smith had registered his 17th Test ton to propel the Aussies to 6/465 — a lead of 22.
Smith’s third MCG century in as many summers was more a picture of grit than stylish batsmanship, though of course he still played some impressive strokes in his innings.
Pakistan did a fine job of tying the Australian captain down early in the day and again when they took the second new ball. As is custom he walked across his stumps and whipped through the leg side, but there was rarely any fluent off driving on show.
When he did get on the front foot to full offerings, more often than not he opened the face and sliced the ball through point. He wasn’t at his best, but even Smith at 80 per cent is better than plenty of batters at the top of their game.
Usman Khawaja missed out on reaching triple figures ahead of his captain in the morning. Starting the day on 95, Pakistan gave him nothing loose. He ended up throwing his hands at a wide ball that probably wasn’t full enough for the shot and was caught behind for 97 — the second time he’s been dismissed three short of a century this summer.
It wasn’t always pretty, but it was still damn effective.

Peter Handscomb joined Smith at the crease and continued his seamless transition into Test cricket. He took the majority of the strike and raced past his leader, again favouring the leg side but also hitting square on the off side when given width.
He survived a short ball barrage from Wahab Riaz and notched yet another half century before a somewhat anticlimactic end to his innings when he sliced in the air to point.
Nic Maddinson scored 22 — his best Test innings to date yet still unfulfilling — doing nothing to ease the pressure on his shoulders as Shaun Marsh returns to competitive cricket in the Big Bash League. Matthew Wade too fell for just nine, continuing his miserable run with the bat since replacing Peter Nevill in the Test team against South Africa in Adelaide.
Mohammad Amir failed to claim a wicket but was easily Pakistan’s best bowler. He beat Peter Handscomb time and time again, but any outside edges either landed short or flew wide of fielders behind the wicket.
A result is highly improbable at this stage. Smith will likely look to bat until at least lunch on Friday — unless the visitors bowl the Aussies out — and will assess what he has to gain by declaring with a slender lead and sending the visitors in to survive the rest of the day.

Steve Smith was forced to play a patient innings but the runs continue to flow from the bat of the world’s best batsman.
Smith notched his 17th Test century midway through day four on his way to posting his third consecutive calendar year with 1000 Test runs. Smith entered this innings with 914 runs in 2016.
He’s become just the sixth Australian batsmen to score 1000 Test runs in a calendar year three times, having scored 1146 runs in 2014 and 1474 in 2015.
Five — Matthew Hayden (2001-05), Ricky Ponting (2002-03, 2005-06, 2008)
Four — Michael Clarke (2008-09, 2012-13)
Three — Allan Border (1979, 1985-86), Mark Taylor (1989, 1993, 1998)
Hayden (2001-05), Brian Lara (2003-05), Marcus Trescothick (2003-05) and Kevin Pietersen (2006-08) are the only other players in history to reach the mark in three consecutive years.
Smith is also enhancing his reputation as the new King of the Boxing Day Test after recording a century in Melbourne for the third year in a row.
He scored 192 in the first innings of this fixture against India in 2014 and 134 not out in the first innings of last year’s encounter at the MCG against the West Indies.
Failing light and the threat of rain prompted the umpires to take an early tea after Australia’s lead reached 22 runs.

WWE NXT TakeOver: San Antonio 2016 Spoilers

PREDICTED MATCHES (as of 12/5/2016)

Let's take a look at some of the potential matches that seem as though WWE will be adding...

NXT Championship Match: Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Bobby Roode

Based on the most recent set of NXT tapings, Bobby Roode defeated Tye Dillinger, Andrade "Cien" Almas, and Roderick Strong to become the #1 contender, while Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Samoa Joe to win back the title.

PREDICTION: Nakamura retains...for now. But I do think Roode takes it eventually.

NXT Women's Championship Match: Asuka (c) vs. Billie Kay vs. Peyton Royce vs. Liv Morgan

Call me crazy, but I don't think they'll be ready to push Ember Moon into the challenger spot until after this event, and in the meantime, they'll have a Fatal 4-Way between Asuka and the three other highest women on the roster. There's definitely a chance they just do something like Asuka vs. Billie Kay or something, though, instead, although I'm leaning more towards a multi-woman match where Asuka can pin Liv Morgan, leaving Kay and Royce looking strong for when Ember Moon beats Asuka, as Moon will need challengers afterward. Hey, maybe they'll bring another former star back like they did with Mickie James? If that were to happen, Victoria would be my pick.

PREDICTION: Asuka retains.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match: #DIY (c) vs. The Authors of Pain

I wouldn't be shocked at all to see The Authors of Pain take the titles here.

PREDICTION: The Authors of Pain win the belts.

Andrade "Cien" Almas vs. No Way Jose
